Types of Roofing: Asphalt Shingles

June 7th, 2022Roofing

Asphalt Roofing is designed to protect your home through many years of weathering and little upkeep.  Asphalt roofing is also available in many colors and styles.
A great value for your new roof and is readily available.

A new roof is a fairly expensive and important undertaking.  Asphalt shingles are one of the most affordable roofing options.  In fact, if an existing roof deck is still in good condition, new asphalt shingles can be installed without the need for a tear-off of old roofing, reducing the need for that additional cost.  Just ask Knox’s Contracting roofers to see if this is an option for your roofing project.

Different types of roof shingles.

Three major categories of asphalt roofing shingles are:

  • Strip Singles
  • Dimensional Shingles
  • Luxury Shingles
There are differences in each type of roofing shingle. Our roofers can help you select the proper shingle. The different types are:

Strip Shingles

This type of roofing shingle is also known as a 3-tab shingle or strip singles. They are the most basic and original shingles, made from a single asphalt layer, and have a flat, slate-like appearance. Because they are made from a single the weight and cost will be less than other asphalt shingles.

Dimensional Shingles

Dimensional shingles are also referred to as architectural or laminate shingles.  These are now the most prevalent asphalt shingles.  Consisting of two or more layers of asphalt, fused together for a richer and thicker multi-dimensional look.  These roofing shingles are engineered to mimic wood shake and natural slate roofing.

Luxury Shingles

By far luxury shingles are very high-quality laminated shingles.  They offer an appearance and functionality beyond even dimensional shingles.  These shingle “heavyweights” offer premium protection from weathering.  Stunning presentation with the highest quality, dimensionality, and coloration.  If you are looking for a roof with old-world wood shake and quarried slate roofing, this is your choice.
